It was a sad day at Churchill Downs in May 2008, when Eight Belles, a thoroughbred racehorse owned by Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms had to be euthanized at the end of the Kentucky Derby, the 134th running of the race, although she finished in second place behind the winner, Big Brown.

Her injuries were so severe that the on-call veterinarian determined that she could not be saved, not even moved from the racetrack. She was euthanized on the racetrack within minutes of the end of the race.
She was later buried and memorialized by this statue in the garden behind the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on September 7, 2008.
Artist Tony Viscardi created the Eight Belles statue. Please go to his website and check out his interesting and outstanding artworks! www.ViscardiDesigns.com
